The NBA just celebrated another All Star weekend in Dallas with the largest crowd to ever watch a basketball game, but there was definitely a lack of excitement. Almost all the NBA’s top players participated in the game, (minus Chris Paul, Allen Iverson, and Kobe Bryant) but there was a lack of buzz surrounding the weekend. One of the great things about the NBA All Star Game is the fact that they have turned the game into a weekend event. The NBA needs to consider implementing some changes to make the NBA All Star Weekend more eventful. We’ve listed 4 great ways to improve the NBA All Star Weekend below.
1.The Winning Team Gets Home Court Advantage
The NBA All Star Game is virtually an hour long Sportscenter highlight show with ridiculous passes, dunks, and shots. Wouldn’t it be nice to see the best players in the world actually try at both ends of the court? There is one solution; the winner of the game gets home court advantage in the NBA Finals. Major League Baseball has done this before, and the level of intensity was dramatically increased as a result. This will encourage viewers to watch the entire game, and add a spark of excitement overall.
2. USA Vs. The World
After the last Olympic Games, we clearly saw major improvements in the players skills from around the world, and now these players can compete with the American team. Let’s see how the NBA’s top players from foreign countries compete against those from the United States. The NHL has done this in the past, and it certainly drew more attention than average.
3. One on One Competition
The NBA has attempted to make the All Star game into an All Star weekend with the Rookie Vs. Sophomore game, and all the other skill competitions. However, the only events that people actually care about are the 3 point shoot out and the dunk contest, which none of the NBA superstars participate in. There’s no Kobe Vs. Lebron like back in the days when Michael Jordan faced Dominique Wilkins. The solution is to have a 16 man, one on one tournament, and make all the NBA All Stars participate. This will certainly draw a huge crowd, and the players will have to bring their “A” game for bragging rights. These match ups would surely be a way to see each players’ unique skill sets when matched up against others from around the league.
4. All Star Teams Are Chosen By Captains
This will bring everyone back to the days on the playground where no one wanted to be picked last. Take the top two players and have them flip a coin for first pick, and then go back and forth until the teams are chosen. This can take place either the night before or the day of the game. Players chosen in the later rounds will certainly be playing with a chip on their shoulder, in an effort to prove the other captain made a mistake.
